The Sentinel

The Ruby Slippers

"The Ruby Slippers" began as a photograph taken at Cross Estate Gardens in Bernardsville New Jersey. As I worked on this image, it seem to take on a fairytale kind of feel and even though "the yellow brick road" is only a path and the shoes are my version of "the ruby slippers", it still seemed possible that Oz was just around the bend.

The Raven's Wood

I captured this image (minus the ravens) a few years ago in Millcreek Village, a fantastic historically preserved early American village in New Jersey. I would love to know what happened to this amazing tree- some huge storm or maybe lightning. It's limbs were so contorted and angled it reminded me of a giant insect. I used this photo in color for a painting once but in black and white, all of the detail in the grass and brush reminded me of an etching. So again, it has new life as "The Raven's Wood".

A Wing and a Prayer

I came across this old building in western New Jersey. The vines covering the roof reminded me of a tousled head of hair. I'm puzzled by all the different openings and what it may have been used for in it's past lives.

Remains of the Day

This old chair on the porch of an abandoned house is one of my favorite film negatives that I have been revisiting lately with a fresh eye. The image I originally envisioned that would have taken hours in the darkroom is now a lot more possible thanks to the digital medium!

Miles to Go

"Miles to Go" began with a photo taken in The Deserted Village in the Watchung Reservation, New jersey. It was just after a thunderstorm and the afternoon light coming through the trees was amazing! I added the hiker and birds to complete the feeling I had in mind for the image. The title was inspired by a quote from a Robert Frost poem "the woods are lovely, dark and deep but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep".

All Who Enter

I've always had a passion for gargoyles. To me, they represent protection from harm and a guard against evil. True or not, I have a collection of them all over my house (Hey, you never know!).

Rear Window

"Rear Window" is an abandoned building I came across in my travels. I'm still not sure what it's original purpose was but I love the way the vines crawling up the side seem to frame the lone window.

The Offering

The Offering began as one of my black and white film photos. The vintage figure was added for interest and to create a mood. The entire image was then hand colored.

Out on a Limb

I was struck by how this graceful, white limb seemed to flow across all the trees behind it and float above the small stream running underneath.

The Shopkeeper, Rue de Chartres

I happened across this wonderful man on Rue de Chartres in the French Quarter of New Orleans, one of my favorite cities in the world. It was originally shot with black and white film but I think a little enhancement with toning, color and texture gives it a different mood and feel.

A Road Less Traveled

I captured this photograph of an old building in the quaint New Jersey town of Mill Creek Village near the Delaware Water Gap. It's a great place for photography with lots of historic buildings, dirt roads, and places to explore.

Trash to Treasure

Exploring backroads can yield lots of interesting finds for photo opportunities. This simple, forgotten old milk can caught my eye. I tend to find a lot of treasures in what other people consider trash.

A Fire Within

A montage of two photographs- a window of an old building and the figure of a woman peering in are blended together to evoke a feeling of mystery- just what does she see?

And Then There Were Three

This old house has always been one of my favorites from my archives. Something about the three dark windows and the open door tugs at my heartstrings. It's almost as if the house is crying out for someone or something to come in and bring life back once again.

The Gatekeeper

I came across this guy in a shop window in a small NJ town. The shop was directly across from the gate of an old cemetery, hence his title, The Gatekeeper.

Shelter from The Storm

Shelter from The Storm is a montage of two photographs. One is an old building at the edge of a rural cornfield. The sky was rather overcast and gray so the threatening storm clouds were added to enhance the foreboding feeling of the scene.

The Morning After

I first photographed this old stone building in 2006 on my New Jersey backroads travels. The resulting piece became "Shelter from the Storm" with the drying cornstalks trailing off into the tall grass in front. When I came across it again in 2009 the scenario was totally different. The cornstalks and grass were down revealing trees and fields in the background that weren't visible the first time around. The new image seemed to lend itself to minimal color and starkness that became "The Morning After".

The Lamp Post

The Lamp Post was originally a black and white film image that I digitally hand colored to achieve the final look.

When Shadows Fall

When Shadows Fall is a montage of several photographs and scanned objects creating a thought provoking image for the viewer.

The Portal

A thought provoking montage of a number of different photographs.

The Gardener

The Gardener is a montage of several photographs beginning with a bouquet of flowers. The woman was added along with color and texture to convey a feeling of mystery and draw the viewer in.

Lily

Lily began as a photo I took of a window in an old building. The black and white vintage figure of the little girl was added, hand colored and digitally painted to create a mood.

With Strings Attached

"With Strings Attached" is a still life of a bouquet of tulips with books that I photographed and digitally painted in the style of traditional oils.

On Golden Pond

On Golden Pond was digitally painted from an image I captured while roaming the backroads of New Jersey.

Marston House by RD Riccoboni

The Marston House Museum is one of San Diego's finest examples of the Arts and Crafts movement and was constructed in 1905 for George W. Marston and his wife, Anna Gunn Marston. George Marston is noted for many things but most prominently as a civic leader whose interest and work in historic preservation, conservation and history is renowned. The property was designed and built by the internationally renowned architects William Sterling Hebbard and Irving Gill. Surrounded by five acres of rolling lawns, manicured formal gardens, and rustic canyon gardens, this 8,500 square-foot home became a house museum in 1987 after the Marston family gifted it to the City of San Diego for the enjoyment of the public. Spend some time exploring the grounds, formal gardens and canyon pathways in the shade of towering pine, eucalyptus and oak trees. Color is the first thing you notice about my work. What makes it ‘pop’ is the placement of color and texture. The primary colors in my palette are derived from the colors in the original rainbow flag which represent sexuality, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony and spirit. As a painter I am a visual storyteller. A message comes with the art - perhaps it is playful, calming, erotic, disturbing, political, or even sacred. I like to flirt with the issues and experiences we face in everyday life, the things we do and the places we go that define our lives. Whether positive, humorous, or thought provoking, my work portrays events people relate to while creating a sense of place for the viewer. RD. Riccoboni RD. (Randy) Riccoboni is an innovative American-born painter (California, 1960), influenced by his early years living in the suburbs of New York City. A self-taught artist, he credits encouragement by family and teachers for his drive and inspiration.

Old Town Church, by RD Riccoboni

Church of the Immaculate Conception painted by RD Riccoboni, Old Town San Diego California. building started in 1867 and finished and dedicated in 1917. The Church has been in continuous operation since that time and the ties to the Founding Fathers remain strong. In fact, two of the original bells of the San Diego Mission still summon the faithful to worship: one in the Mission San Diego de Alcala in Mission Valley, the other one, here in the bell tower of Immaculate Conception Church in Old Town. Pope Gregory XVI bestowed a great honor on San Diego, as Old Town was originally called, when he made it the seat of the first Bishop of California. In December 1841, the Right Reverend Francisco Garcia Diego, O. F. M., arrived with his retinue and was assigned apartments in the home of Juan Bandini, now known as Casa Bandini - Cosmopolitan hotel which can be seen in my painting titled Calhoun Street. Nearby is Old Adobe Chapel was reconstructed in the 1930's, after the original structure was razed. The Adobe Chapel was the first parochial church in the first parish of California after the secularization of the missions in 1832. The Old Adobe Chapel was the setting for the fictional wedding of Ramona in Jackson's novel. In 1849, a small parish chapel was built and named Immaculate Conception. Now known as the Old Adobe Chapel, this preserved structure can be visited on Conde Street in Old Town. Construction on the present day church began in 1868. Souvenir art of California. From 1892 to 1965, sisters Bess and Gertrude Gilbert, patrons of art and music, brought internationally famous entertainers to receptions in their home. Christian House San Diego painting by RD Riccoboni is a Queen Anne style house. Quenn Anne's are composed of a number of parts, including towers, dormers, bay windows, and corbelled chimneys. Wall surfaces such as coursed shingles, clapboards, and inset panels of sawn wooden ornament are combined with irregular roof lines and decorative wrap-around porches. Windows may include small square or diamond panes. This late Victorian design was built by Harfield Timberlake Christian, the founder of an early San Diego abstract company. Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs by RD Riccoboni

Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs by RD Riccoboni, visiable in the blue gray distance are the Coronado Islands just off Mexico to the south. Human figures look out to the sea and relax on the cliff tops. Located in a large metropolitan area just west of the city of San Diego, Point Loma encompasses more than 660 acres of native habitat. Cabrillo National Monument rests protected on 160 acres at the southern-most tip of the peninsula, which is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west, San Diego Bay on the east, and urban development on the north. At the time Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Bay in 1542, a rich diversity of life was present, ranging from desert cactus to moisture-loving algae, tarantulas to sea slugs, and gray foxes to sea lions. Today it's among the rarest in the world. Although only a remnant of that biologically diverse ecosystem remains, it is well worth visiting and protecting. This unique diversity of plants and animals occurs here because Cabrillo National Monument lies at the southern-most extent of some plant and animal ranges, and the northern-most extent of others. Point Loma is also a major migratory area for birdlife boasting the most diverse range of species that have been seen in one place in the USA. A bird lovers paradise.

Nineteenth Century Vernacular the persimmon colored Senlis Cottage built in 1896 is a modest cottage built for Eugene Senlis, an employee of San Diego pioneer horticulturist Kate Sessions who has come to be known as the "Mother of Balboa Park" This cottage house, without the amenities of gas, electricity, water, or sewer, is an example of dwellings occupied in the 1880s by working-class people in San Diego California and throughout the United States. The porch has an interesting railing with asian influence. Located in Heritage Park near San Diego State Historic Park in Old Town is developed to preserve examples of San Diego's historic Victorian architecture including Italianate, Stick-Eastlake, Queen Anne and Classic Revival styles. US Army Dragoons. 1840's Soldiers on horse back in Old Town San Diego California painted by RD Riccoboni. In the early days (1840's), the only mounted unit in the US Army was the 1st Dragoons. In 1849, the 2nd Dragoons were formed, as was another unit called the Regiment of Mounted Rifles. Dragoons were mounted infantry in California. They carried a weapon known as a musketoon in the early days, which was a shortened musket. Later, they carried carbines. They basically used their horses to move them from place to place, not for fighting.Most, if not all, of their fighting was done dismounted. Just up the hill from my gallery in historic Old Town San Diego is the Hillcrest section of San Diego California's most popular and lively neighborhoods. This is the intersection of University and Fifth Avenues with the famous Hillcrest Sign. The sign was erected in 1940. To find out more about Hillcrest visit Hillquest.com. Hillcrest is an older neighborhood which has gone through gentrification, mostly residential with a large amount of retail shops and exciting restaurants along tree-lined streets. Small to large traditional homes, and apartments abound here. The neighborhood is bound by Mission Hills to the northwest, Bankers Hill and the Zoo with Balboa Park to the south, and University Heights and North Park to the east. A large ridge overlooking San Diego Bay borders the neighborhood to the west. Also in Hillcrest is Balboa Park where I have created many of my paintings. The neighborhood's proximity to Downtown San Diego make this an exciting neighborhood. In Hillcrest every July is San Diego Gay Pride, an annual celebration for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Festivities take place the last weekend in July; there is a Gay Pride parade, then a two-day festival in Balboa Park and cultural events the entire month. Hillcrest, CityFest, is an annual street festival which features food, live entertainment, a beer garden and street vendors. This event takes place annually in August a week or two after the pride fest. This image illustrates a technique known as "The Droste Effect" coined after the Dutch Droste chocolate company whose packaging featured a nun holding a tray with a box of droste chocolate, upon which the same nun appeared, and so on. Recently it was discovered that "The Print Gallery" by M.C. Escher also exemplified this effect, and it was proven that the effect could be reporduced mathematically and with many variations. I created this image using a custom mathematic formula applied to each pixel of the source image using a piece of open source software called Mathmap.

HDR is short for High Dynamic Range. The human eye, that incredible receptor of the human body, is capable of receiving a range of lighting levels that far exceeds what the camera sensor is designed to capture. While recording several exposures of the same scene and creatively layering them in the digital darkroom, I am able to come closer to what my eye actually sees, and in some cases, what I wish it could see. I have a lot of fun with this process. Please have a look around and enjoy!

Boat and reflection :: HDR

There are some pieces that mean more to me that others, and this is one of them. While on a creative photographic retreat in the San Juan Islands with a few other photographers and artists, the instructors had quite a few locations for us to enjoy over the week. At the end of the workshop, we all had a chance to review our work in front of our peers. At the very end of the presentation, I was very proud (humbly I might add) to find out that 2 of the 3 images that the lead instructor chose as his favorites for the week were mine, and this was one of them :)

Chillion Castle

Around Lake Geneva, there is this cool little castle right outside of Montreux. While attending the Jazz Festival there one year, I couldn't resist exploring this little gem. By the way, this was my first HDR image ever!

The Florida sky, unpredictable as it is, occasionally rewards the patient appreciator with a spectacular light show.

Minneapolis Skyline

While in Minneapolis for an event I was working on, I took a little time to explore the concrete jungle of this vibrant city. The sky that afternoon kept repainting itself with hundreds of tiny little clouds. I liked the contrast between the soft natural sky and the sharp synthetic architecture.

Sedona

Sedona is to many people, quite a spiritual place. For me, it was somewhat spiritual as well as it was a place that refueled my passion for photography.

When processing this one, I kinda had this apocalyptic "End of Days" feeling with water flowing out of control. It was actually quite a calm scene when I originally captured it though!

Owachomo Bridge under Starry Skies

The Owachomo Bridge is located in Natural Bridges National Monument west of Blanding, Utah. I saw this bridge in a National Geographic article "The End of Night" Nov. 2008, p.102 and thought I have to give it a try. While I was scouting Moab I decided to take the 2 hr. drive to this location and lose another nights sleep! For this image, I used a 30 sec. exposure at f3.5 and ISO 6400. The light on the bridge is indirect light painting. During the exposure I pointed a flashlight behind me reflecting off of the rocks and trees. This produced a much more even light than when I would shine the flash light quickly across the bridge.

On a Morning Stroll in Central Park

It was a lovely, calm morning in New York City as my wife and I walked through Central Park. She was very patient with me lugging around my camera and tripod, stopping every few moments to snap a picture or two! ;-)

Retreat

Autumn colors were wonderful in Central Park during our visit. I was amazed that with a short walk from our hotel we could be away from the hustle and bussle of NYC and in this area of quiet, peace and beauty.

The Morning Commute...

At times I drive 160 miles to Salmon, Idaho to work for the day. The scenic drive never disappoints. Here, just north of Gilmore Summit, a meandering stream is seen in early morning light.

Rising Above the Fog

There was a lot of fog around the Snake River Overlook in Grand Teton National Park. Fortunately it began to clear as the light descended on the peaks.

Fall Creek Falls

While driving along the South Fork of the Snake River the other day I noticed the water level was quite a bit lower than normal. This allowed me to walk out to a bar in the river normally accessible only by boat. This gave a new vantage point for Fall Creek Falls which I usually only view from the side. The water coming over the falls was down as well revealing such interesting rock and moss!

First Light of Morning

It was an inspiring sight to watch the early light make it's way down the peaks at Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park.

Remembering - Fog in the Forest

As 2008 nears it's close, I think back on few special days photographing the Rhododendrons, Redwoods, and Northern California morning fog.
