Elegant ink paintings by accomplished Carmel artist Casey Shannon. I am a contemporary Sumi-e painter reaching beyond the limits of traditional ink painting. I try to capture spirit as the brilliance of ink is transferred to the paper with the stroke of a brush as it is pushed across the surface. The object in your picture seems to 'breathe and take on life', and this breath begins to fill the page with spirit just as it does in all of nature which surrounds us. The inner power of the painted form shines through the ink and the white page. The white space surrounding the painted form becomes as important as the object itself. The ink painting represents soul, spirit, and beauty all at the same time and in concert. (ImageKind watermarks do not appear on your purchase.)
This is an Art for Cancer image. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this work will be donated to Leukemia Cancer Research. This painting is dedicated to my daughter who is fighting AML. This image was created using sumi (ink) and watercolor painted on Shuen Paper (Xuan Paper). What is Shuen Paper you might ask? It is Chinese rice paper. Rice paper is the brush painter's canvas. Mastering the way ink behaves on the different rice papers is one of the essential skills of the brush painter. There are basically two kinds of rice paper -- raw paper and sized paper. Shuen Paper (Xuan Paper) is raw paper and the most popular paper in China among brush painters and calligraphers. It is the most sensitive of the rice papers, cheerfully displaying dynamic strokes and complex shade variations with translucent fluidity and original spontaneity. These tiny pink flowers grow abundantly on the hillsides in Carmel in the Spring and cascade in the wind like pink waterfalls.
Original sumi-e created on rice paper. Bamboo Spirit Dance is the title of this work celebrating the inner spirit of the mighty bamboo plant. Bamboo signifies Strength with the ability to bend.
Original bamboo sumi-e created on rice paper. The 'Three Graces' standing tall in strength. Bamboo symbolizes the ability to bend yet still stand tall.
My sumi-e images are inspired from the spirit of nature such as plants, trees, flowers, and especially bamboo. Bamboo symbolizes strengh and the ability to bend. Bamboo combines upright integrity and accommodating flexibility. "When the storm comes, it bends with the wind. When the storm ceases, it resumes its upright position." Bamboo can be said to be a symbol of Chinese culture. Along with the pine and the plum, it is one of the "three friends in the winter". Because on cold days, when most plants wither, these three plants still stand in the wind. Such a spirit is highly admired by Chinese. So even today people still like to plant some bamboo in a corner of the garden. Matched with several well-placed stones, it can make an elegant picture. There are artists who have specialized in painting bamboo throughout their entire lives. To non-experts, bamboo looks simple to paint, but to artists, it requires a whole lifetime of study. I have been painting for over 40 years and I am just a humble beginner. 100% of the proceeds of the sale of this art print will be donated to the Sarcoma Foundation to help fight cancer.
